The Open Studio Hand Building series is for developing clay artists who have clay experience and have the foundational skills to work with clay wheel throwing or with hand building. The goal is to allow students to work with developing wheel throwing skills (perhaps more intermediate throwing) and for hand builders a more complex development of work, be it functional or sculptural. Students advance at their own pace therefore creating as few or as many pieces in the session. Students have the choice in continuing with new class sessions for continuum of artistic development and self growth.

This open studio format is not a class with lessons, but rather a friendly artistic endeavor that is supported by the people who make up the session community. Dinorah will provide oral suggestions for best practices if a student needs assistance and be available to provide information as she works on her individual projects. Students can observe and be introduced to clay handling strategies and new techniques.

Because supplies and firing are not included, the class is considerably lower in cost than the Beginning Hand Building Class due to the format of the Open Studio concept.

  • Students provide their own clay.

  • Students may opt to either provide their own glazes or may use the instructors glazes. The fee varies depending on the glaze needed.

  • Students are responsible for bisque and glaze firing fees. The firing fees depend upon the kiln space needed.

The class is designed for beginning students working in clay. A number of hand building methods will be taught to create forms, such as bowls, platters, containers, mugs, etc.

Emphasis of surface decoration is explored. The use of englobes, underglazes, and glazes are considered for surface finishes. Design techniques are employed to add design to the surface.
